Let me tell you my story.....I had some Life Coaching a few years ago when I was struggling with work/life balance. It worked a treat and I was instantly drawn towards the coaching industry. I started doing some research, some voluntary stuff and then went on to set up my own business. I worked really hard (probably too hard) in the initial couple of years, but now the business is a huge success. It is great helping people on a 1-2-1 basis and the income has helped me in so many different ways. All on a part time basis without putting the current income from my day job at risk.
I will let you into a secret....I could have got their much quicker if I had support from somebody that had done the same. I learnt the hard way by trying something, it didn’t work, try something else, that didn’t work, try something else and eventually I cracked it, but it was exhausting and really frustrating - it took ages. That’s why I love what I do when I help people get their quicker and easier. They save money, time, energy and start generating a credible income much quicker.
What makes my approach special?
- I don’t like taking big risks and making massive investments or quitting my day job for something doesn’t provide a highly predictable income. I can’t afford to do that.
- I don’t kid people into thinking it’s easy and quick to generate a successful practice. Unless you take big risks it will generally take some time. I want to be honest about that with you.
- I’m not overly bothered about doing all the speaking and events stuff to get clients – I don’t have the time and it’s not for me – so I don’t do it. I find other ways that I am more comfortable with, which are flexible enough to fit in with my other priorities like my family and day job.
- I’m patient.
- I’m extremely structured in my approach. I always set goals, plan everything out well and I have cultivated a serious amount of discipline. I manage my time well, take action and get things done.
My approach means low investment and low risk. If you want to take big risks in return for a big income in super quick time then this is not for you – find a higher risk alternative now if that’s what you want. Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that, but what I am about to offer you is low risk and low investment. Admittedly, it may take you a little longer to get there, but you don’t risk losing your other streams of income (e.g. your day job or income from an established business) in the process! Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare?
I didn’t want to quit my day job. I love my day job, enjoy what I do, really like the people I work with, I’m learning every day and it pays well. In fact, I still make it my top priority and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The coaching comes second. Also, coaching full time would drive me nuts!! Could you imagine that? Client after client after client, day after day, all day and into the evenings and weekends – I love coaching and helping people, but I couldn't do it all the time. I know a couple of coaches who do this and trust me; it isn’t good for them or their clients.
What’s great is the balance that I have between my day job and business. I like to do different things and enjoy being around different people. I am also definitely not up for the isolation that working alone all day brings. If you have an existing income that you want to protect, but you want to help people on a 1-2-1 basis and want an additional income through Life Coaching with the possibility of switching to full time at a later date then this is definitely a good option that will suit you.
